The Mitten

The Mitten: A Ukranian Folktale
By: Jan Brett

(Traditional Literature)

Nicki wanted Baba to make him a pair of white mittens.  Baba told him having a white pair wouldn’t be a good idea, since the snow is white he might lose them when he is playing outside, but she made a pair anyways.  Nicki went to play outside and lose one of his mittens, while he is trying to find the mitten animals find it and all squeeze in it.  The first was a mile then a rabbit, hedgehog, owl, badgar, fox, bear, and a meadow mouse.  The mouse’s whiskers tickle the bears nose causing him to sneeze and shoot them all out of the mitten and the mitten flew in the sky.  Boy sees the mitten falling from the sky and catches it.  When he came home with the mitten one for the mittens was huge from all the animals being in it.  Baba was confused…

**illustrations include images of the boy looking for the glove on the side of the pages showing both stories at once**
